Listed as World Heritage by UNESCO since 1982, the Royal Saltworks of Arc and Senans is the masterpiece of Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1736-1806), visionary architect of the Age of Enlightenment. It is also a rare testimony in the history of industrial architecture.
Manufacture intended for the production of salt, the Saline Royale was created by the will of Louis XV and built between 1775 and 1779.

Since the 8th century, the Salins-Les-Bains Grande Saline used salt water sources as raw material. The existence of these natural resurgences is explained geologically by the presence of a prehistoric sea which after evaporation has left a bank of salt buried today at 250 meters deep.
